The Second Annual Lone Palm Regatta – a Sailing Spectacle

Spectators on the Southport waterfront were treated to a flawless day and a sailing spectacle Saturday, when thirty boats participated in the Southport Yacht Club’s second annual Lone Palm Regatta. The event was co-sponsored by Loco Jo’s Bar and Grill, The Old American Fish Company and Annapolis Performance Sailing.

“We had a perfect day for the second annual Lone Palm Regatta,” Southport Yacht Club Commodore Eric Hoffman said. “We accomplished our goal of having 30 boats registered for the race. And we’re so grateful to the regatta co-sponsors; the many community businesses that donated raffle prizes; the Privateers, who played at the after race party and award ceremony; and all the Club volunteers who worked so hard to make this a top-notch community event.”

Fleet Captain Jaime Deale set the course to make sure all levels of sailors had a challenging but manageable race. “The winds were perfect for a 10-mile course out the river and to Bald Head Island,” he said the day after the race, adding the incoming tide at the race start tested the sailors’ skills. “If you didn’t have fun racing a sailboat yesterday, then you don’t know how to have fun.”
