Every year, the Cape Fear Yacht Club sponsors the Blessing of the Fleet for any and all boats that are willing to join in this event. They provide a ‘Blessing’ boat that anchors somewhere near the Southport Pier. On Mar 18, around 2pm they begin the ‘blessing’ and a procession of local boats, big and small, sail close to the Blessing boat in order to receive a special blessing from one of our local clergy. They also try to ‘hand’ each boat a flower to signify the blessing – so you need to get close!
This tradition began centuries ago in Mediterranean fishing communities. The practice always involved a blessing from the local clergy that was meant to ensure a safe and bountiful season. This tradition has evolved over the years and over different cultures and locations, but the basics are the same: Have a safe and prosperous season on the water.
Come join the other boat captains in the Cape Fear region and receive your blessing on Sunday, March 18 from 2 – 4 pm near the Southport Pier. No registration or fees involved; just show up.
