Club Description and Membership Information
Club history: The Southport Yacht Club was founded in 2014 by a group of boaters with the vision of a club centered around just a few basic principles:
- More time on the water … less time at the dock
- Plenty of social events
- Providing boating education and safety to members
- AND giving back to the community
Club purpose: The purpose of the Club shall be to promote good fellowship between individuals actively interested in yachting, to organize and sponsor yachting events for the enjoyment of its members and to hold yachting races and regattas to foster and teach the sport of yacht racing. These activities shall include sail and power boating.
To this end, the Club will promote safe boating, interaction with other yacht clubs, education seminars, social functions within the Club and will assist in the protection of lives, property and rights of all boaters, recreational and commercial.
Club Activities: We offer social and boating events as well as boating education. Our social calendar offers monthly get-togethers; our cruising schedule includes nearby ports for the weekend or week; our annual Lone Palm Regatta – one of the premier sailing events in the area – is held in the early part of the summer. In addition, we offer a PHRF sailboat racing series which offers the opportunity for competitive keel boat sailing.
We offer training seminars on subjects ranging from cruising guides for coastal and long distance cruising, to a dummies guide on diesel motors. We actively support the North Carolina Maritime Museum located in Southport and are involved in other boating outreach programs.
Membership Requirements: Our charter provides for a maximum of 80 members divided into two categories. Boaters are those who own a sail or power boat which meets the requirements for registration in the state of North Carolina. Non-boaters are those who do not currently own a boat of this type. Since our goal is to encourage boating, our non-boater membership is limited to 10% of the current membership or a total of eight members. All members are voting members. Members are also expected to participate by volunteering for one or more committees responsible for carrying out the various events. Membership dues are $250 for the initial year and $125 for subsequent years.

Meet the requirements of membership listed above.
Be sponsored by two current SYC members in good standing, one of whom you have known for at least six months.
Attend at least one scheduled club event as the guest of your sponsor(s). Your sponsor(s) will be responsible for introducing you to the membership committee and other members, and shepherding you through the membership process.
Complete an application for membership, which you will receive from the membership committee at the request of your sponsor(s).
Be reviewed and approved by the membership committee.
Be elected by the board for membership.
The membership process may take two to three months and, once approved, there may be an additional waiting period once we have reached our limit on membership.
